ASHTANGA VINYASA - Unlocking the secrets of Ashtanga Vinyasa
The Method and Philosophy of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
The method and philosophy of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga come from the ancient Sanskrit tradition. At its core, Ashtanga Vinyasa is a form of Hatha yoga built upon a system of vinyasas, or connected poses to transition between postures.
The Primary Series: Foundational Ashtanga Postures and Flow
Common poses in the Primary series, such as Marichyasana D, Utkatasana, Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana, and Supta Kurmasana, build strength and flexibility. The poses are organized in a particular order to foster relaxation while maintaining focus and attention. This combination of flow and postures is called Vinyasa, which translates as “to place in a special way.” Each vinyasa flow ties together traditional postures with a focused breath engagement or ujjayi breathing to energize the practice.
The Intermediate Series: Progressing in Your Practice
Also known as Nadi Shodhana, or Nerve Purification, the practice takes all the postures in the Primary Series and deepens them so that you can go further physically and mentally. All the postures remain the same, but you hold each posture for a few breaths longer and deepen your intensity.

These are just some of the ways Shri Thorat Yogashala will help unlock the Intermediate Series and take your Ashtanga Vinyasa practice to new heights. One of the best things about Ashtanga Vinyasa practice is that you’re given the opportunity to work with your breath.
Progression over perfection
The idea is to take things slow as you learn the practice and then build up over time as your strength increases - you can learn new postures and advance when it feels right for you.
